Assignment 1 - Agyness Deyn Abstract

Abstract:

This assignment will be based on the concept of "Bricolage", a way of thinking and making that heavily influences multiple subjects, fashion and architecture being two.

Bricolage is defined as:

bricolage  plural of bri·co·lage (Noun)

Noun
  1. (in art or literature) Construction or creation from a diverse range of available things.
  2. Something constructed or created in this way.

In other words, it is the construction or creation of a work from a diverse range of things that happen to be available, or a work created by such a process.

In fashion, we can relate the punk movement to Bricolage and the repurposing of the safety pin or the zipper as a status symbol.

In architecture, Le Corbusier applied the term Bricolage in the book "Collage City", a suggestion that it was an assembly of found objects from the history of architecture - Bricolage is considered the jumbled effect produced by the close proximity of buildings from different periods and in different architectural styles.

So in this context -house for Agyness Deyn-, the assignment will be exploring a Bricolage of construction joins taking inspiration from Fashion.

Agyness Deyn:

"Deyn is known for being something of a chameleon and constantly changing her looks. Her hair has been blonde, red, brown and black" - wikipedia

Deyn is also known to be indecisive about her career choice as she was scouted as opposed to entering the fashion industry by conviction. Deyn has also expressed an interest in the film industry, having hired an acting agent in 2012 although it remains somewhat obscure how far she has gone with this. Whatever it is, it is more than enough for her to declare retirement from modelling.

Therefore, the design of her house has been loosely based on her indecisiveness, or rather her versatility in moving between projects and wanting to try something new.
Container boxes were chosen due to their modular construction and being widely available, can be repurposed to function as architecture - bricolage on a very basic level of using readily available objects.

It is also intended that the entire house can be moved/transported internationally should Deyn feel bored of her surroundings.

Initial designs incorporated a track-mounted shipping crane however it is of the opinion of this designer that such a move -although in true nature of practising bricolage- would detract from the overall statement of other Bricolage items (eg: shipping containers, container joins)

This is not to say however that a crane element will not feature in the final design. It will instead, merely synchronise with what is going on and not draw attention away form what is most important. In the final design, the crane will see a shift in its role in moving shipping containers to serving as an elevator.

The inclusion of the crane is to not only serve a functional purpose in allowing Deyn the flexibility in moving wherever and whenever she feels but to also appeal to her tomboy-ish side.

The final design achieves this by incorporating the Union Jack into its truss system and is remote-operable. The crane sits harmoniously within the architecture, humble just like Deyn and only revealing its true beauty/form when called upon.
For what hides behind the truss is a twisted shaft that generates movement in two axis from one force applied in one direction.

The crane is intended to incorporate three systems dependent on each other:
  1. Rotational - Crane rotates on x-axis as force is applied along the z-axis
  2. Vertical - Crane rises/lowers along the z-axis
  3. Elevator platform Vertical - Platform will rise/lower via cordage run along the arm and down the shaft.
In addition to the crane appealing to Deyn's tomboyish character, the entire house can be converted into a paintball field with gangways and the ability to plant obstacles with the crane making for a non-lineal and flexible playing landscape.

Deyn has also collaborated with her sister Emily in producing a line of clothing for Uniqlo. Deyn is also very affectionate of her husband and has been spotted wearing his clothing (plaid shirts) and having little hesitation in displaying public affection. Therefore, Deyn's house will incorporate a guest room and have a master bedroom to accommodate herself and her husband.

The roof will also make an allusion to the plaid pattern she has identified so closely with. This will be achieved by gluing two acrylic sheets together with perpendicular patterns reflecting burberry's iconic plaid.

At the age of 25, Deyn has often been referred to as "the new Kate Moss" not because she looks anything like Kate Moss (fact from it in fact) but she has been seen as the latest English model to take the world by storm.

The way Deyn's name is spelt brings quickly to the top of our minds "androgyny" (aGYness deYN) although it is by no means a tribute to what she is well known for (she had changed her name at a very early age - before she entered fashion).
Deyn can be seen modelling primarily in androgynous settings and as such, her house will too reflect this trait of hers.
This will be achieved by text inspired by her modelling for the Gareth Pugh's line of rhyming t-shirts.
Selected Rhymes:
Note  the androgyny in the selected rhymes (eg: Calvin Klein as a female, Prada as a female in the persona of a male)

* Back to mine Calvin Klein
* Harder Harder Muicci Prada
* Flick yer bean for Agyness Deyn (obscene command to females to perform a sexual fact for Deyn)
* I'll show you who's boss Kate Moss

Other rhymes that didn't make the cut:
(Due to either being difficult shapes, awkward size, etc)

  • I don't do womens just Raf Simons
  • Some acide jazz Alber Elbaz
  • Lets get bare Nicole Ghesquier
  • Uhu Gareth Pugh
  • Fancy a screw Behati Prinsloo
  • Do me Daily Christopher Bailey
  • Get yr freak on Giles Deacon
  • Play with me Stella McCartney
  • Treat me meak Alexander Mcqueen
